The People, Knowledge, and Values Behind the Work

NIU Hawaiʻi is rooted in a legacy that began long before it became a practice.

It began with family, experience, culture, learning through the hands, and knowledge passed down through generations.

The Story Begins

There is a story behind every practitioner.
For Ka’ānohi, that story begins with his Father.
Some of his earliest memories are connected to learning through his hands. From approximately three or four years old, he remembers his Father asking him to massage his neck, shoulders, arms, hands, and back.
What began as a simple childhood experience became an early lesson in therapeutic touch, listening, feeling, patience, and presence.
At the time, he was simply responding to his Father.
He did not yet understand that his Father was teaching him.
He did not know that those moments would become part of the foundation of who he would eventually become.

Four generations of knowledge

The work behind NIU Hawaiʻi did not begin with the creation of a business.

It comes from a lineage of knowledge, experience, family, and service.

Our Story

From approximately three or four years old, Ka’ānohi remembers his Father asking him to massage his:

What may have seemed like a simple request from a Father to his young son became something much greater.
It became an early lesson in therapeutic touch.
It taught him to feel.
To listen.
To pay attention.
To be patient.
To be present.
And to understand that the body communicates even when words are not spoken.

The Calling

Years later, Ka’ānohi made the decision to attend massage school and become a Licensed Massage Therapist.

He told his Father:

“Dad, I wanna go to massage school and become a licensed massage therapist.”

With a big smile on his face, his Father’s response carried a deeper meaning:

“I already taught you.”

This moment connects the childhood experience to the professional path that followed.
What began as something learned naturally through family became something Ka’ānohi consciously chose to pursue as his profession.

What My Father Taught Me

The lessons were much deeper than simply learning how to massage.
My Father taught me to:

Feel. Listen. Pay attention. Be patient. Be present. Understand the body. Understand the person.

Knowledge is not always passed down through books.
Sometimes it is passed down through presence.

Through observation. Through experience. Through generations.

From Family Knowledge to Clinical Practice

Becoming a Licensed Massage Therapist gave Ka’ānohi the opportunity to take those early lessons and develop them through education, clinical experience, and years of working with the human body.

The practice became more than simply massage.

It became about understanding the person as a whole.

The body. Movement. Function. Pain. Recovery. Restoration.

And the relationship between the practitioner and the person being cared for.

The NIU Hawaiʻi approach is grounded in:

Clinical Knowledge • Therapeutic Touch • Experience • Restoration • Individualized Care

The Person Behind The Practitioner

Before becoming a Licensed Massage Therapist, Ka’ānohi was a son.

A child learning through touch.
A child learning through experience.
A child who did not yet know that the lessons being given to him would eventually become part of his life's work.
The focus of this section is not a résumé.

It is the person, relationships, experiences, and values that shaped the practitioner.

The Legacy Continues

Becoming a Licensed Massage Therapist gave Ka’ānohi the opportunity to take those early lessons and develop them through education, clinical experience, and years of working with the human body.

The practice became more than simply massage.

It became about understanding the person as a whole.

It is about a relationship.
It is about honoring the individual.
It is about approaching restoration with knowledge, humility, professionalism, and care.

The NIU Hawaiʻi Philosophy

Nurturing Is Universal.

At the heart of NIU Hawaiʻi is a simple belief:

Nurturing is universal.
Care is universal.
Connection is universal.

The work may be clinical, but the person receiving care is never simply a condition, an injury, or a diagnosis.

They are a person.
That understanding guides the way NIU Hawaiʻi serves.

My Commitment

My commitment is to continue learning, continue serving, and continue honoring the foundation from which this work came.

The hands that once massaged my Father as a child became the hands I now use professionally to help others.

That is the legacy behind NIU Hawaiʻi.

Not simply a profession.
Not simply a business.
A continuation of knowledge, experience, family, service, and care.

This relationship with the elements informs my work, allowing me to bring a sense of peace and renewed energy to those I serve.

Kaānohiokalā Pea & ‘Ohana

My father, Keoki, was raised by his maternal parents, Mary Kaiawe Manuia Pea and John Lonomakahainua Pea Sr. He was a pioneer in the hospitality and healing industry, becoming the first licensed massage therapist hired at the Mauna Lani Hotel when it opened in 1983. Throughout his career, he was a tireless advocate for Lomi Lomi, ensuring traditional Hawaiian healing had a place in the modern resort setting. He was inspired and encouraged by his brother John, who shared the wisdom that would eventually shape my father’s professional path.

My Uncle Una was raised by his maternal grandparents, Lily Kekino Kamauoha Manuia and John Kalei Manuia. He was a legendary figure in the field, serving as the first licensed massage therapist and owner of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel massage parlor starting in 1965. Beyond his professional practice, he was the Grand Master and founder of Paola Science, the specialized art of “Quick Healing.” His contributions laid the foundation for the standards of massage in Hawaii today.

The legacy of protection and healing in my family reaches back to the Hawaiian Monarchy. My grand uncle Willie was the son of Lily Kekino Kamauoha and John Kalei Manuia. His father was a Master of Lua and a personal bodyguard for Queen Liliuokalani, a role requiring immense discipline and knowledge of the body. Uncle Willie carried that ancestral wisdom throughout his life, serving the community with humility and obtaining his license as a massage therapist in his later years to continue his mission of service.

Born in Hilo and raised on the Hawaiian Homestead of Panaewa, my life has always been anchored by my family, my culture, and my faith. I am the son of Janice Luana Kualii Pea and George Leon Iolani Pea.

As a child, I’ll admit I resisted the practice of massage; to me, it was work that took away from my playtime. Looking back as an adult, however, I recognize the profound gift of my father’s discipline. He was meticulously grooming and preparing me for my eventual calling. Today, I carry that legacy forward as the founder and owner of NIU Hawaii, a practice I have proudly led for 13 years.
